Some words from new A Grade coach Stan Carnes

Ben introduced me in last week's newsletter and has asked me to add a few words this week. By way of introduction, I've been coaching for the last 10 years across various levels ranging from Assistant Coach of the Combined Services backs to an Army Women's Tour of New Zealand to 1st Grade and Colts Teams at Melbourne Rugby Club and Melbourne University. I'm very proud to have been involved with all of those teams and have worked with a lot of former Crocs players in them over the journey. I got into coaching because I broke my legs parachuting in the Army. (For those of you who have seen Misery, you get the picture).

Ultimately, coaching isn't about me, it's about you guys. As Graham Henry said, "It's not about x's and o's, it's about Richie's and Joes."  There has been a lot happening across the rugby world recently, with the resignation of Ewen McKenzie and now Michael Cheika taking over.  In the league world we've also seen Wayne Bennett return to the Broncos. I'm a big collector of quotes and something that Wayne Bennett said really stuck with me: "You only play footy for a limited period of time. Do you want to look back on this time with pride and fulfilment or frustration?

Whilst Wayne obviously doesn't know about Dennis Bree our 63 year old prop, he's got a point.  We only play for a limited time and if we are to be successful, then we have to think about what we want to achieve both on the pitch and off the pitch. Most of us dedicate about 10 hrs a week to rugby so we want to have fun. Coaching today is about all of us working together to ensure that the players, managers and committee have the best environment and we all enjoy our time. Ben, Rhys and I have been doing a lot of work behind the scenes in preparation for Season 2015, and we'll be having a meeting before the end of the year to determine our goals and key events for pre-season. This will include guys from the whole adult playing group including the 18s.  Once that is locked down, we'll produce key dates before Christmas and I'll also put them on the various Facebook pages so you get time off work etc in advance.

Finally, a big shout out to the U18s who have been getting good numbers for 7s training and the girls squad who have been playing their first games of rugby.

It's time to ride the wave.
